According to the International Union of Railways, the high speed train “plays a key role in a stage of sustainable development and combating climate change”. As a regular long-distance train traveller in Europe, I have to say that the opposite is true. High speed rail is destroying the most valuable alternative to the airplane; the “low speed” rail network that has been in service for decades. The introduction of a high speed train connection invariably accompanies the elimination of a slightly slower, but much more affordable, alternative route, forcing passengers to use the new and more expensive product, or abandon the train altogether. As a result, business people switch from full-service planes to high speed trains, while the majority of Europeans are pushed into cars, coaches and low-cost airplanes. A look at European railway history shows that the choice for the elite high speed train is far from necessary. Earlier efforts to organize speedy international rail services in Europe accompanied affordable prices and different ways to increase the speed and comfort of a rail trip. Quite a few of these services were even faster than today’s high speed trains.
On the face, this is not particularly offensive if the class exists primarily within the AMYA. But if 99 percent of class boat owners are not AMYA members, and the class specification is approved by a multi-country class organization — then this practice is divisive. As we all know, there are enough challenges to growing and maintaining an RC sailboat class. It is confusing to newcomers and unnecessarily thumbs-a-nose to larger class organizations.
In the past, AMYA members who own one of these two large classes have not attempted to change the class specifications within AMYA, even though they could. But now, a splinter group from the Nirvana class is proposing to vote on a class specification that is not in compliance with the international class rule that Nirvana follows — and tomorrow, it could be the RC Laser specification coming under attack.

November 23, Posted by pamf No matter how slow you are going, you are still lapping everyone on the couch. You may have encountered the above quote already. But there lies a problem with the quote itself — it is once again doing comparing. Often only half the facts are available and many assumptions are made. For example, the person on the couch could be injured, or ill. There are many kayakers who have been in that very position and it has perhaps been the primary reason for them abandoning another activity, such as hillwalking, and taking up paddling instead.
Alan is one of them.

Our team recently visited Bintan to rediscover its secrets and this article is proof that the Bintan we know is really only the tip of a culturally diverse and very exciting iceberg. Before you read on, have a taste of what we got up to in Bintan in this video we filmed while we were there: These old bones had nothing on the youthful vigour of these kids and it was a miracle I even made it to the finish line. The Sea Gypsies, or Orang Laut people of the sea as they are also known, have traditionally lived nomadic lives in simple boats off the coasts of Indonesia.
In efforts to introduce better education and accountability for its people, the Indonesian government constructed this village to introduce land ownership exclusively for the sea gypsies to entice them to return to land. Even though they no longer live in their boats, the Orang Laut still adopt old ways of life including hand-making their own boats and fishing nets, and having fishing as their main source of income.
The typical cruising speed – the speed a paddler can comfortably maintain for several hours in mild to moderate conditions, allowing for a 5 to 10 minute break at the top of each hour – of a standard sit-on-top kayak is at best 3 mph (my own cruising speed on my Scupper Pro is typically only mph).

It would be easy to get sidetracked in Bend, a fun-loving, high-desert city bathed in sunshine and bisected by the serene Deschutes River. But it would be a shame to miss the nearby Cascade Lakes along this drive, where glaciers and volcanoes created a landscape of tremendous beauty, diversity and geologic significance.

Iqyax were originally developed by the Inuit , Yup’ik , and Aleut. These first kayaks were constructed from stitched seal or other animal skins stretched over a wood or whalebone-skeleton frame. They are heavy and slow, and a pain to paddle for more than a couple of miles. Rocky Point by Shawn O’Donnell That’s a familiar refrain many of us have heard at one time or another. It is a “wisdom” not only commonly espoused by sit-inside kayakers, but also one that has gained wide acceptance among us sit-on-top kayakers. Many of us have come to believe that sit-on-top kayaks are simply not designed to cover a lot of ground or water, if you will and, as a result, tend to limit our paddling excursions to relatively short distances of no more than miles, usually much less.
In some cases, this negative mind set has caused paddlers with long-distance aspirations to trade their sit-on-top kayaks for sleeker, more efficient sea kayaks. I would know, I was tempted to do just that a few years ago. In this article, I will try to make a case for sticking with your sit-on-top kayak for long distances, particularly for the solo paddler.
What is a long distance to one paddler may, of course, not be a long distance to another paddler.

Paul Berry After building the product for Huffington Post, and owning the product and engineering groups at AOL after we were acquired, it was clear to me there was a huge gap between what the current CMS offering gave the world and what the world needed. Five years later we are at scale, moving the needle and doing to WordPress what Airbnb did to Craigslist.
Social and Centralized WordPress, Drupal, and the custom CMS solutions of the world are all independent, non-connected instances that each need to be updated individually. There are over 87 million instances of WordPress alone in the world, and each security upgrade, feature update, and every other single thing has to be updated for each site individually.
By contrast, RebelMouse is a social, centralized platform built to keep up with the speed of the tech giants. Our updates are pushed out to all of our sites at once and sometimes even multiple times a day with content creation tools integrated directly into social APIs. We can get clients off of clunky CMSs and into the future in a matter of days. We iterate with the times and tell you what’s changing in the world, how we’ve reacted to it, and how it’s built into the updates you get from the platform.
Our creative agency team trains your teams or takes on special projects. And it doesn’t take months, it takes hours or days. We can suck up a WordPress site, optimize its page speed, the user experience, the balance of ads, and how you monetize. We do it in our sleep now. We are simply the best in the world at this and have taken it to another level.
