Maryland Passions Personals: ‘Maryland’ Games Directory
The efforts to capture the fleeting sounds of music have followed two basic methods: The former—musical notation—matured earlier, and in one form or another it virtually monopolized the recording of music for centuries; the latter had to await the emergence of technology for its development. In notation, symbols are written down as a message to a trained performing musician who understands them and reinterprets them into sound. Signals, on the other hand—being direct physical impressions of, and potential stimuli to, sounds—bypass the performer in their reproduction and, in some electronic compositions , even in their recording. This article concerns itself solely with the latter, nonsymbolic, method. For information on the former method see notation. Types of reproduction The physical reproduction of music has been accomplished in three major ways, which can be designated the mechanical, the acoustical, and the electrical. In the mechanical, an automatic instrument, such as the barrel organ , plays music that has been built, or programmed, into the mechanism by the designer; the resulting sound is that of the apparatus. In the acoustical and electrical methods of reproduction, sonic vibrations themselves are captured in performance and reproduced—by purely mechanical means in the acoustical method and by the use of vacuum tubes, transistors, and other such devices in the electrical.
At the core of recorded music development were the inventors, theengineers, the coprorate entrepreneurs – and the lawyers, for many disputes were resolved in court. I will add, or rather include, just a few notes for my own purpsoes. One of my first difficulties was listing in chronological sequence the various labels I have in the collection – forty-six.

Sep 05, Remember how old it made everyone feel? Well get ready to feel even older: Time flies when you’re dating someone you met via Instagram DM. Yes, Noah Cyrus and Lil Xan have called it quits — and they did it in spectacularly messy fashion, via Instagram Story. Fans are riveted and everyone seems to have an opinion. We plebes first caught a whiff of the breakup when Xan, 21, whose real name is Diego, posted an Instagram Story saying he thought he was being cheated on.
The timeline gets a little fuzzy here. You might even say it’s fuzzier than the pubescent facial hair Xan likely struggles to grow. But at some point, he claimed that the relationship was set up by his and Cyrus’s record label, like any grown man would: Shout out to Columbia Records, too, for setting up that fake relationship. But then — plot twist — Noah updated her own Instagram Story to set things straight.

On this page I’ll try and unravel some of the markings that appear within the “deadwax” or “run-out groove” sections on US 60’s discs. This will be an on-going project, so all additional information is welcome. First up, here’s a quick “rule of thumb” disc-dating grid covering five major labels and the infamous West Coast based Monarch pressing plant.
Here, we will take a look at the nature of student-run record labels, while also checking into all the good that can come from a student who takes the time and dedication to get involved in a student-run record label.
When it involves Billy Joel. Deep into the process, Joel pulled out, due to worries over how personal and probing the book might become. Even so, he allowed Schruers to finish the tome on his own, drawing on approximately hours of interviews he already granted him. New details of the songwriter’s love life and career are revealed in the book. The Definitive Biography’ is out Tuesday. The book offers a funny and revealing account of one of the most popular songwriters of our time — not to mention of our area.
Many of Joel’s relatives weren’t so fortunate.

But before a Canadian Columbia has no ring. By way of illustration, figure 3 shows an American Columbia with an 80 mm ring. It picks up the light just inside the gold-coloured circle near the outside of the label. Figure 4 shows an American Columbia with a 32 mm ring. It is easier to see because it is in the centre of the label.
Figure 5 shows an American Columbia with a 70 mm ring. It is right at the gold-coloured circle near the outside of the label. It is difficult to see – quite deliberately.

The first two-eye design on the later CL pressing, and also CS , lasted from mid to about summer That variant was used from early to about spring 4. In , the print on both mono and stereo copies was changed to white, and white arrows were added to the stereo logo.
The degree sound was used for both mono and stereo editions up until , when it was dropped from Mono, probably after someone asked the obvious question: CS first appeared with uncoated paper stock in warm red ink in fall , and switched to glossy paper with Pantone Red at the very end of the year.

He was also promoting events at the Hotel Peabody in Memphis, and by had enough money to start a company to record local events and do custom recording. The company he formed was called Memphis Recording Service, with a small recording studio at Union Avenue in Memphis.
A disc jockey on WHBQ named Dewey Phillips no relation to Sam came to Sam with the proposal to form a record label to record the many blues singers in and around Memphis.
The label bosses were trying to change her material, forcing unsympathetic big-name producers on her, bruising her muse. “It was a hard, depressing, frustrating time,” Keys recalls. “The record.
Share via Email Clive Davis is a record industry colossus. A grizzled, hard-edged year-old veteran of five decades in the music business, Davis is the man who recognised the raw talent of troubled songstress Janis Joplin and a gawky New Jersey teenager named Bruce Springsteen. He also discovered two very differing divas in Patti Smith and Whitney Houston and, in more recent years, launched Puff Daddy’s record label.
Unsurprisingly, Rolling Stone recently pronounced Davis “the greatest record man of the past quarter century”. Two years ago, the indefatigable Davis founded the New York-based J Records, an imprint of BMG, and shortly afterwards received a phone call from the worried manager of a young local girl. Alicia Keys, an year-old singer-songwriter of rare talent, had a deal with Columbia Records but it wasn’t working out. The label bosses were trying to change her material, forcing unsympathetic big-name producers on her, bruising her muse.
They didn’t want me to be an individual, didn’t really care. They just wanted to put me in a box. Hearing her perform some self-penned material, he immediately sensed a “special, unique” artist. A call to Columbia secured her release, and the mogul signed Keys to J Records and gave her back her creative head. This summer he released her debut album, the languid, elegant Songs In A Minor.
Odeon The International Talking Machine Company Odeon was the first company to institute a system of independent agents who worked with local artists to record local music. She recorded four sides for Columbia in December, , when one of that company’s field recording units stopped in Dallas to record local talent. The results of that session were good enough, and presumably sold well enough, that she was invited to record 18 more sides for Columbia over the next two years. I found her first issued record in a box of 78s in Chattanooga, Tennessee a few years ago, and it quickly became one of my favorite blues records.
Columbia wanted to make the label look more attractive, compared to the label with the quite unattractive 32 mm ring right in the centre. Canadian Pressing, no ring, recorded late (Fig. 6) By way of contrast, figure 6 shows the Canadian version of the American record shown in figure 4.

Issue – A first issue is NOT the same thing as a first pressing. In fact, a first issue can be a very high pressing. For example, a copy of Dark Side of the Moon with a solid blue triangle on the label is a first issue. To determine the pressing, you must look at the pressing indicators stamper letters and mother numbers found in the records run off groove. GMP indicates that side 1 was made using the th stamper, and GRR indicates that side 2 was made using the nd stamper.
Since, generally, records were pressed with each stamper, this record is approximately the 73, th pressing of Dark Side of the Moon. These vinyl pressing plants were closed down in the early s and everything since then has been subcontracted out. However, often times record shops would seal the records themselves upon receipt.
